"Elena, the yarn, stands for being close to nature. No harsh chemicals were used while cleaning, washing and spinning this wool. This yarn has personality: its twists and curls were worked by machines that are 100 years old. It is honest: it is about going back to basics, to the core of things. A garment worked in this yarn will have a rustic, rough feel and even basic textured stitches will be accentuated.
Elena natural un-dyed comes in three shades: natural (off-white), brown and various shades of grey.
We recommend that, before using our yarns, you wash them in tepid water with a mild pH neutral detergent. This will allow the yarn to blossom and will improve the softness of the wool.
Please note that the weight of each skein is not identical. This is because the machines at the fibre mill are not modern enough to produce consistent weights. Instead, it is the spinner who knows, from experience, how much wool has to be processed in every batch in order to get "more or less" equal weight skeins. Further, after washing, the skeins lose weight and as they dry (they do this even on the shelf!), they will become lighter.
We decided to weigh the skeins AFTER they are washed and dried in the sun. Skeins are then assigned to weight categories by following the +/- 5 gr rule: for example, we consider 50 grams to be between 46 - 55 grams and we consider 60 grams to be between 56 - 65 grams, etc. This is the best compromise that we can make in order to respect the technological limitations of the traditional fibre mills and also to ensure the level of standardisation required by modern commercial trades.
Elena 2 ply skeins are around 80 gr."
