Something is different. If you’ve been feeling like social media hasn’t been working the way it used to, you’re not alone. More and more business owners—especially creatives like us—are realizing that relying on social media alone to grow their business is like building a house on rented land. And the landlords these days are getting more and more evil… The rules keep changing, and the landlords are not on our side. We forget that we are there to either spend money on ads or consume ads and that’s what the platforms are designed to do. While we see them as ‘FREE’ spaces to share our work but there’s noting Free about it and I think it’s time we take our heads out of the sand.
That’s why email is making a comeback. But email never actually stopped working. It’s just that many of us got caught up in the social media hamster wheel and forgot about this powerful tool sitting right in front of us. We started one at one point, we sometimes even send it out, but a lot of us have only one way of looking at the format; ‘a newsletter’, start collecting all the information about our products and services and then feel overwhelmed and don’t ‘find’ the time to actually write and send it.
I’ve been thinking a lot about my own email strategy lately, and I’m making some big changes. The goal? Simplify, make it more personal, and actually enjoy the process. And if email has felt overwhelming for you, I want to show you how easy it can be to start—or restart—your list in a way that works for you.
The Big Shift: Why Social Media Alone Won’t Cut It Anymore
We’ve all seen it:
- A platform changes its algorithm, and suddenly your posts reach a fraction of your audience.
- You spend hours creating content that disappears in 24 hours.
- Engagement drops, and it feels like you’re shouting into the void.
- Creepy businessman with way too much power are pulling the strings on the way you communicate with your audience.
Meanwhile, email is quietly doing its thing—delivering messages directly into inboxes, no algorithm required. And with more people pulling back from social media or using it more intentionally, email is becoming the way to build real, lasting connections with your audience.
Because when you feel like things are getting icky, you download your list, and just move it elsewhere. Something you can’t do with the social media account that you’ve built over so many years in so many hours.
I’m simplifying my own approach to email because I want it to feel easy and natural—something that adds to my business instead of draining my energy. If that resonates with you, keep reading.
The Power of Email: Why It Works for Creative Business Owners
If social media is like trying to hold someone’s attention in a crowded room, email is like sitting down for a cozy one-on-one knitting session.
Here’s why email is so effective:
♡ It lands directly in your audience’s inbox. No fighting for visibility.
♡ It builds trust over time. Your subscribers get to know you in a deeper way.
♡ It doesn’t demand constant engagement. Unlike social media, emails don’t disappear after a few hours.
♡ A simple email sequence can sell without feeling super icky.
And you don’t need a massive list for email to work. A small, engaged list will always outperform a big, passive audience.
Take a breath, read that last sentence again. No, really!!
But Email Feels Hard… (Common Struggles & How to Fix Them)
I know what you might be thinking:
☁︎ “I don’t know what to write.” → Think of email like a conversation, not a marketing blast. Write the way you’d talk to a friend.
☁︎ “I don’t have time.” → You don’t need to send emails constantly. Even a monthly email keeps you connected.
☁︎ “I don’t want to be salesy.” → Email isn’t about pushing sales—it’s about helping. Share insights, stories, and things your audience actually wants to hear. (We now send our friends quick messenger sentences but before that we emailed our friends and before that we wrote letters. Try to find that vibe and write your mails with a lit candle and a fountain pen as a prop to set the tone.)
If you’ve struggled with email in the past, you’re not alone. That’s why I’m shifting my own strategy—because email should feel good, not like another task on your to-do list.
How to Start (Or Restart) Your Email List Without Overthinking It
If your email list has been sitting there collecting dust (or if you haven’t started yet), here’s how to make it easy:
⚀ Pick a simple platform. (I love Flodesk for its aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-use design.)
⚁ Create a basic welcome sequence. Just 3-4 emails introducing yourself and what people can expect from you. (Flodesk has templates, just follow those)
⚂ Give people a reason to sign up. A freebie, exclusive insights, or just the promise of valuable content.
⚃ Commit to a low-stress email schedule. Once a month is enough to start.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to start now and keep it simple. I -for one- got curious about Substack but found it too much of a learning curve, so I didn’t take action. For me, in my life, things have to be pretty, fun and easy. Otherwise my adhd brain will just find another squirrel to chase. And even if you don’t have ADHD, we’re busy enough as is…
The Key Takeaway: Start Now, Keep It Simple
Email isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. It’s about showing up in a way that feels good for you and valuable for your audience.
And if you want help making email feel easy, there are ways to get support. (I offer a session where we can simplify your email strategy together, but no pressure—start where you feel comfortable.)
If you want, your email strategy (big word for small decisions we can make together) can start to bring you actual clients instead of likes and followers within days.
Social media will keep shifting, but your email list? That’s yours to keep. And that’s worth investing in.
